From the beginning, Dr. Choi's vivid story-telling grips readers with its honesty and vulnerability. She tells of her childhood with her harsh and difficult mother, her desire to be the good child and make her parents proud and how that paved the way to her being a good doctor, attempting to appease the harsh and difficult medical industry.
The turning point in Dr. Choi's life came with a bold decision—to step away from her career in pursuit of authentic wellness. This decision was not just a career pivot but a profound personal quest to reclaim her identity and heal from years of familial enmeshment. As a practicing medical doctor, Michelle Choi has a unique perspective on health and the medical system in general. The author started out as a typical, idealistic young physician, and over time became dismayed by the reality of working in a corporate medical setting. To a layperson, some of the basic facts are shocking, for example the sheer number of patients that a doctor sees in a day. Michelle walks us through what such an encounter looks like, how she has only 20 minutes to do this and yet much of that time is spent taking notes on a computer and ordering tests, leaving only a handful of minutes to interact with the patient. What can a doctor possibly really accomplish in that amount of time? The book touches on many issues that affect ordinary people, but aren’t really discussed adequately in a medical settings. For example, many of us will deal with the end-of-life of a loved one in a medical setting, and Michelle discusses how the medical approach to death is likely not the approach that is most compassionate or most beneficial for the patient and their family. There are many other examples like this.
The book is engaging and interesting throughout, and is set apart by how the author weaves her own family and personal history into a larger narrative about wellness. The author’s own life is both an interesting perspective on the human side of being a doctor, but also just really interesting and funny on its own. The book is eye-opening on many levels, and leaves the reader with lots to think about.

Most doctor memoirs put me to sleep faster than a melatonin gummy. All the medical mumbo jumbo, I’ve never been able to finish a whole book. I am not a self-help girl.
But, buckle up for this one, because it's about Michelle chucking her stethoscope at the healthcare machine and yelling, "Peace out!" in the most hilarious way possible. This book is Michelle's epic journey from burnt out worker drone to boss babe (with footnotes, because science!** [1]**). She ditches the doctor robot routine and dives headfirst into the wonderful world of true wellness. Michelle thought she had it all - the fancy degree, the white coat, the patients who magically get better after a seven-minute chat. Battling insurance companies and playing whack-a-mole with prescriptions, but assembly-line medicine wasn't what she signed up for. Feeling like a glorified pill dispenser, hoping for hemorrhoids, Michelle decides to do something most people wouldn't dare – she scraps the whole thing for a journey inward and forward that makes Eat Pray Love look like a weekend trip to the farmer’s market.
Get ready to laugh, cringe, and maybe even shed a tear - because healing isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. You'll also learn a thing or two about the mind-body connection, and generational trauma, with personal stories and research to back it all up! Michelle spills the tea on corporate medicine, explores her messed-up family history, and figures out what it actually means to be well.
Through it all, Michelle's humor shines. "Untangling" is a must-read for anyone who's ever felt stuck in a career, suffocated by family, or simply needed a reminder that you can switch your current path, still have a life, and maybe even a hobby that doesn't involve scalpels.
This book is like your best friend finally coming clean about her crazy life, except she has a PhD and can back it all up - because a friend with a footnote is a friend you can trust!
So, grab a cup of tea, or something stronger (margarita for me please!) … and get ready for a hilarious and insightful journey of whole wellness and self-discovery that might inspire you to laugh your way to a healthier and happier you.

Dr. Choi’s intimate writing style grabbed me from the first page (perhaps because I also like to cuss?) and I consumed her entire book in one sitting. As a traumatized little girl, her struggles are relatable to all people pleasers. Dr. Choi brings the reader inside her patient exam room to shed light on the dilemma of committing herself to patient care at her own emotional and physical expense. Her high level of professional ability is matched by her ethos of an empath. From my perspective as a former lifeguard instructor, I connected with the theme “you can’t help the victim if you are drowning yourself”. By courageously outlining her own healing, Dr. Choi heals the reader and grants permission to live our best lives any way we damn well please.

Dr. Choi's courageous honesty in sharing her own truth inspired me to reflect on my own.
She identifies foundational flaws in the structure of our healthcare system that need to be addressed, for the health of our society as well as the mental health of our medical professionals. We all need healthcare, and we have little choice as to how we receive it. Dr. Choi inspires me to advocate for proactive, sensible, effective healthcare.
